The 1.6-mile bridge across the Patapsco River collapsed as a result of the catastrophe, which happened at roughly 1:30 in the morning.
The concrete bridge appears to be intact, but the steel infrastructure that collapsed was part of the bridge, according to SkyTeam 11, a news chopper headquartered in Baltimore.
At a press conference on Tuesday morning, Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott called it a “unimaginable tragedy”. This is a calamity beyond your wildest expectations. You never imagined witnessing a bridge fall of this magnitude. It had the feel of a scene from a movie. Saving lives ought to be our first priority.”
At a press conference on Tuesday morning, Baltimore County Executive Johnny Olszewski also made a statement, saying, “We woke up this morning to an unthinkable tragedy.” We have a long road ahead of us, not just in the search and rescue but also in the aftermath.”
Videos that have been uploaded online depict the entire structure collapsing multiple times. Thick, black smoke billowed from the ship when a fire broke out, according to the Associated Press.
A local informed 11 News that a ship struck it and continued on its way. We believed it to be an earthquake.”
According to Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley, there is no sign of foul play or intentional behavior.
Look for the Lives of Survivors
“This is a serious emergency situation,” stated Kevin Cartwright, a spokesman for the Baltimore Fire Department. Right now, we are concentrating on attempting to stabilize and save these people.”
At 6:30 a.m., Baltimore City Fire Chief James Wallace said that two individuals had been pulled out of the water thus far. While the other declined medical attention, one was transferred in critical condition to a trauma facility. There’s a widespread search and rescue operation going on.
According to Wallace, authorities first thought that seven people might be missing.
According to Wallace, dive teams are having trouble seeing in the dark when in the muddy, debris-filled area.
Wallace stated, “Our guide teams will lead us.” “The water flow is affected, so for now, we think the flow is coming, so we will have to consider several factors.”
According to Scott, “We have to think about families and affected individuals.”
The crew of the ship is still on board, according to Wallace.
The search is being conducted by a number of agencies, including dive teams and the Coast Guard. The SkyTeam 11 film features workers looking for water.
